Worms in Real-Time
So why real-time? We certainly love the turn-based version of Worms and that’s exactly what we’ve been doing for years. Working on the WMD Worm was an absolute blast and we are very proud of it. But we always want to push the envelope a little further and scratch that “what-if” itch. Sure, we’ve done spinoffs of Worms before, but we wanted to go all out and see if we could do a real-time version of Worms.
We started prototyping Worms Rumble a few years ago with just a small team, and what they came up with in such a short amount of time really piqued our interest and got us very excited for what we could do. We then started having internal usability sessions to get a feel from across the studio for how the game felt to play. Does it still feel like Worms? Is the fun factor there? Are we crazy to even try this? The results we got from the team were encouraging, and immediately we saw that it had that “one more game” appeal. Feedback during the prototype phase was invaluable, as it then pushed us to see where we could take this.
Keep Rolling, Rolling!
Due to the real-time nature of Worms Rumble, we had to see how to change the worm’s movements. Usually you see worms crawling slowly, with occasional jumps to traverse around the landscape, but with Worms Rumble, we’ve sped things up significantly. Not only does Worm move faster, you can now roll around the arena at high speed, perform wall jumps to traverse at speed to get to higher ground and away from danger, and dodge those “incoming” bazooka shells and grenades. .
It takes a lot of balance to get this feeling just right while making sure it feels fair to all players. You won’t be able to keep rolling on the floor, or hanging out on your favorite wall, because our little annelid friends now have stamina that will drain when you roll or wall jump. Only when you slow down will your stamina bar refill and make you more vulnerable to incoming fire! With great power … sorry. Move!
Cross-Play
This is what you guys wanted, and we finally made it happen. We can confirm that Worms Rumble will support cross-platform multiplayer! We will bring you an online 32 player experience like you have never seen before in a Worms game. The arena that the team has built will have you fighting in some of the worms’ favorite places to congregate. Take the Missile Mall for example, a shopping center that sits on top of an underground rocket silo, there are lots of open spaces to cause carnage, and tiny air vents to sneak in. A well-placed Sheep or Banana Bomb can spell Game Over!
Worms Rumble will be released with three game modes. Deathmatch, Last Worm Standing, and Last Squad Standing. Deathmatch does exactly what it says on the page. is a 32 player battle to see who can get the most eliminations before time runs out, and would be the best game mode for new players to tackle Worms Rumble, learn weapons and utilities, and hone those skills before going on foot. -go with more experienced players. The Last Worm Stacing
In Last Worm Standing, 32 players will battle each other once again, only this time, once you’re down, you’re out! But don’t worry, you’ll be able to watch the action afterwards and you can check out the other players, or, jump straight into another match if you want to get back to the action.
Last Squad Standing will feature ten teams of three players battling to become champions in the arena! You will be able to play with your friends on other platforms and fight with others who dare to challenge you. We’ve introduced a revive mechanic to squad mode, so that if you ever get knocked down by a rival, your team members will be able to bring you back into the game. Like with Last Worm Standing, once you’re out, you’re out. This mode is all about teamwork! Work together, and you’ll have a much better chance of succeeding and becoming the squad to beat!
In Last Worm Standing and Last Squad Standing, not only will you have enemies to fight, but confined zones will play a large role in the outcome of the battle. Linger on one of them, and you’ll start to lose health until you move on to another. Restricted zones won’t always start or finish at the same location, so you’ll need to watch for warnings when they appear and tail them out of there to a safe location.
Customization
The gameplay and customization of Worms go hand in hand, so we’re of course bringing it back for Worms Rumble. How come? You’ll be able to add some really cool items like headwear and facewear, and we’ve also added some extras right now, including awesome weapon skins, clothing, and emissions! Unlock more and more swag as you play and add your own personal flair to your invertebrate avatar!
